Lead Yourself First, So You Can Lead Others
With John Bostain
There are literally thousands of different leadership courses, books, and articles to help us become better leaders. Some of the content is better than others, but overwhelmingly, the material focuses on how to lead others. While there is no argument that leaders need to lead others, we cannot successfully lead others unless we can lead ourselves first. Through guided discussion and video review we will look at key elements of self leadership and how we can enhance our current skills.
John Bostain is the President of Command Presence Training, a law enforcement training and consulting company headquartered in Brunswick, GA. He has committed the last 29 years to law enforcement, 27 of which have been as a trainer. John is currently a guest lecturer for the FBINAA Leadership in Tumultuous Times Forum, the VALOR Officer Safety and Wellness Program, and was the keynote speaker for the FBINAA 2023 National Conference.
John began his career with the Hampton Police Division (HPD) in Hampton, Virginia where he held positions as a patrol officer, patrol supervisor, detective, academy instructor, and SWAT team member. In 2001, John joined the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA where he served in multiple training divisions and taught multiple disciplines. John left Federal service in 2014 to pursue his dream of establishing Command Presence Training, which was recently selected as the 2023 Georgia Veteran Owned Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Handling Critical Incidents with an Emphasis on Mental Wellness
With Lt. Jon Koch, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office
We train frequently on how to respond tactically to critical incidents. However, we rarely train on how to respond to critical incidents from a wellness perspective. How do we help our employees during a critical incident? How do we prepare our employees to return to their assignments when there is a “new normal” after a critical incident? How do we help employees’ families after their loved one has experienced a critical incident? We will give an overview of ways to respond to critical incidents with an emphasis and focus on wellness, the importance of Peer Support teams and their roles, and the necessity of having an established list of resources prior to a critical incident.
Jon has been in law enforcement since 1997 and with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office since 2008. Jon has worked in Patrol, Communications, and Detention at various points in his career and currently serves as the Administrative Lieutenant for the Patrol Division. Jon has been part of Peer Support for the last 10 years and is currently the Administrator of the Peer Support Team for Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Jon is also a Regional Coordinator for the non-profit, FRST Midwest, where he assists with training new and veteran Peer Support team members as well as coordinates Peer Support’s response to critical incidents.
Jon has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Washburn University and is a graduate of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center’s Johnson County Regional Academy. Jon is a graduate of the FBILEEDA’s Leadership Institutes Trilogy series, which he completed in September of 2022.
Jon is married to Jill Koch, who is a Master Deputy with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and they have four children ranging from 12 years old to 19 years old.
